On a hilltop, east of Caernarfon Castle are the remains of a Roman fort, Segontium, founded around 77 AD and occupied for around three centuries. The Roman Emperor Magnus Maximus (335-388 AD) features in The Mabinogion story The Dream of Macsen Wledig. Maximus (Macsen) dreams of a beautiful woman in a far-off land, and after sending men across the Empire, she is found in Caernarfon. Elen, the daughter of the local Chieftain, falls in love with Macsen, who then grants her father sovereignty over Britain and builds three castles in her honour. Although fictionalised, the story has some basis in historical events. Segontium is run by Cadw.
